Greetings everyone,

Just wanted to introduce myself. I'm Chris, age 37, currently teaching philosophy at the local community college. I got here by way of looking into druidry as a possible spiritual path to embrace, and a conversation with a current member of the AODA pointed me in the direction of this forum. I'm really quite new to the sustainable living scene (although I did spend a year in a rural monastery where we lived fairly close to the land), so for the time being I'll do a lot more listening and learning than talking. It's struck quite a deep chord with me, however, so I'm really looking forward to sharing in the wisdom of this community.

Chris

Welcome, Chris!

Glad you're here! All my family's from Long Island, tho I'm in Oregon for the past couple decades. I keep trying to get them interested in looking at the world differently, and I'm somewhat encouraged by a niece (who went to SUNY Stonybrook) who's gotten the family into recycling and more gardening (besides the usual Jersey tomatoes), but mostly I'm not getting through.

That monastery experience sounds interesting. Hope you'll share it.

Again, welcome!

Hi Cathy, Thanks for the

Hi Cathy,

Thanks for the welcome. Being a paradigm of suburban sprawl, Long Island isn't the most hospitable place for efforts toward green living, so I understand your plight.

I was a novice-monk at Mount Saviour Monastery just outside of Elmira, NY, where raising sheep was the primary mode of work. It was a very simple lifestyle that I still miss quite a bit. We were very conscious of making due with what we had instead of buying more, right down to our habits (newcomers were given the habits of former monks instead of having new ones made). It's also the place where I kicked my TV habit. There was only one for the community, and it was used only to watch the occasional video. I haven't owned one since.

sometimes we need the withdrawal period

It's interesting how many people speak of a time of "withdrawal" (the method/reason varies) that gets them outside the mainstream fog and allows them to see how toxic it can be... and allows them not to pick up bad habits again! It's too bad that in those weight loss spas, they don't ban tv also - I can't imagine anyone trying to seriously lose weight while still watching tv!

Good luck with your efforts and let us know how you do in Long Island.
